Summon the Rhythm (2010) Solo Trombone and Brass Band
With an apparent abundance of unexplained mysteries, mythical creatures, folk tales and magic, South America is as well know for its folklore as for its rich cultural history.
Summon the Rhythm takes its inspiration from an important facet of this mystical and spiritual identity, Shamanism. Shamanism is based on the premise that the visible world is pervaded by invisible forces or spirits which affect the lives of the living The role of Shaman within a community is that of a spiritual healer and intermediate between the worlds nature, humanity and the spirit. Music, particularly rhythm, plays an important part in Shamanic ritual with a strong emphasis placed on mesmeric onomatopoeic chanting, dance, natural sounds and the prominence of the animal skin drum, rattle and gong in ceremony. Summon the Rhythm consists of four continuous sections: Incantation, Transformation, Manifestation and I am the Rhythm (based on tango dance rhythms). Each of these sections embody one of the above Shamanic musical ideals, telling the story of contact with nature though the spirit world.
